There’s a running joke in my house between my 19-year-old son and I. See, he goes to a university that gets great basketball news pretty much every year. For example, this year he gets to hear that his Arizona team is grabbing the nation’s top recruit.
So what’s the running joke? Every time he mentions how good the Wildcats will be, or the Patriots, or whomever, I counter with the same sentence: “Hey did I mention how good the Rhode Island RAMS will be this year?”
And he just smiles.
We’ve been beat up, hurt, disappointed, crushed beyond all recognition. We’re the boyfriend who doesn’t trust his girl, the voter who hopes his elected official represents him well. But we’ve been burned so many times in recent years that we are afraid. Afraid to be happy, afraid to trust, afraid to…dream.
Just when we feel almost secure, a one point loss…then when we feel the swoons of the past are indeed history, a blowout loss. So we worry, haunted by the nightmares of mistakes of trust. Broken promises.
For the first time since 1998 the Rams beat a nationally-ranked team, this time it was #21 Nebraska, in overtime. E.C. Matthews started rough but overcame the jitters to score 22 points in the second half, and hit key free throws late in overtime. Among the key stats? URI outrebounding Nebraska 49-36.
It was a year ago this week, we were finally going to see the URI Rams up front and personal. Watch them play two games, a tough D2 opponent in Metro State and with a win, on to face one of the country’s best teams in the University of Arizona. It had been many years since this fan (class of ’78} saw this team in person.
The team was full of promise then. Dan Hurley at the helm, a new culture of winning being instilled into the program.
There’s a resurgence of promise for Rams fans thanks to the hiring of Coach Dan Hurley. Hurley brings his intense spirit and family pedigree to Rhode Island, instantly changing the culture of the team and sparking hope for the future. Take a listen to his straightforward approach in this interview with Rhode Island Rams TV.
It was just a few years ago that Rams star Will Daniels was leading the team and making headlines. Now he’s doing the same in Latvia. We catch up with Will in an exclusive skype interview.
These days Jimmy Baron is lighting them up in Russia after a stint in Turkey and then Spain. He gives us insight into what it’s like to play in Europe and answers the questions of the current Rhody Faithful.
